⬅️ Previous: Labeling Persuasion/Manipulation
Description
- Permission persuasion consists of taking actions to give (or take) someone’s permission to do something;
- When used to give or take away permission to do something that harms the person, it becomes permission manipulation;
How It Works
- Permission persuasion works by either giving someone mental permission to do something (to feel at peace, to move on, and so on), or by taking that permission away from them (forcing them to stress over something or act immediately);
How to Protect Yourself from It
- In many cases, the other side is trying to either force you to give yourself permission to let go of something - or, on the other hand, prevent you from doing so;
- The most important protection is to realise that only you can give yourself that permission, and not be manipulated by someone else into doing it;
- This also occurs with emotions. For example, marketers may not give you permission to feel worthy, or to feel valued, or good about yourself until you buy something;
- Again, same fix. Realise nobody can give you that permission except yourself, and don’t let them drive you into taking rushed actions to try and “check the box”;
Techniques That Cause It
- Giving or taking away someone’s permission to be at peace (Permission Manipulation)
- Giving or taking away someone’s permission to feel good about themselves (Validation Manipulation)
- Giving or taking away someone’s permission to do something or not
- Giving or taking away someone’s permission to satisfy an urge (Satisfaction Manipulation)
- The “first satisfaction” effect

Opaque Certifications
- Standard + Labeling + Permission Manipulation;
- Something being “certified” uses this specific word to make it seem trusted. That is, you give yourself permission to trust it due to the label. It’s also standard manipulation if the criteria for a certification are unclear;
Consent
- Standard + Permission Manipulation;
- When a person or company dictates specific terms the other side may consent to. They are engineering the rules so that the other side gives explicit permission for them to do anything they want within those rules;

00:10:05, Chuck convinces Walter to tell him Dr. Gilbert’s name

- Summary: Chuck Rhoades is trying to find out the doctor that Axelrod used for the Ice Juice sabotage, and believe it’s the same doctor that let Donnie die in Season 1. Donnie’s late husband says that his doctor went to the funeral, donated to a charity, and more… which are all guilty actions one takes to give themselves permission to not feel guilty;
- When confronted with the possibility of Dr. Gilbert being dirty, Walter says, “Dr. Gilbert was one of the kindest people possible. He was at the funeral, and he was one of the first people to donate to the charter school in Donnie’s name”;
- Considering that Dr. Gilbert was the one who pretty much killed him sooner (or, technically, didn’t let him live longer), it makes sense he would be doing all of these things due to feeling guilty;
- In short, he was making up for his actions, and by donating, trying to “check the box”, and give himself permission to move on;
