Description
- When a company (or person) claims to have “consent” from people. They are engineering the rules and terms in an agreement, and forcing the person to sign it;
- It’s standard manipulation as they are engineering the terms the person must accept, while forcing the person to give their blanket acceptance of it;
How It Works
- First, standard manipulation is the gaming of rules, or the gaming of behavior within those rules for manipulation. In this case, companies change the terms of consent so that users are, technically, agreeing to things they never would. In many cases, because they don’t understand it. Same with people. They do something offensive and then say, “Hey, you consented to this”;
- Then, it’s permission manipulation because they are forcing the person to give permission. When you consent, you are actively and explicitly agreeing to let the company/person behave how they want in this area, because you are giving them explicit permission to do it;
