Description
- Identification persuasion consists of forging commonalities, empathy, or other techniques to make the person identify with the manipulator more than they usually should;
- When used to lie, outright, about what you have in common, or give the person a false sense of similarity, it becomes identification manipulation;
How It Works
- The person will either mention commonalities, or use empathy to make you feel understood, or say they are similar to you in some way;
- Either way, you will drop your guard, and you will trust the person more than you should. This leads to them taking advantage of you based on this;
How to Protect Yourself from It
- We start with the mindset. There are 2 key mindsets to help protect yourself from someone using identification manipulation;
- In terms of techniques, there are 3 main techniques you can use:
Techniques That Cause It
- Using empathy on you
- Mirroring you in some way
- Having common traits/experiences/opinions
- Using your identity and characteristics (real or planted)
- Making you feel special/doing exceptions/giving with a sacrifice
- Using microtargeting/making something seem customised
