➡️ Next: Emotional Persuasion/Manipulation
Description
- Consistency persuasion works by getting a person to do or state something. Then, the manipulator forces them to act in accordance to that;
- When consistency is used to trap a person into negative conditions that hurt them, it becomes consistency manipulation;
- For example, forcing a person to do something because “it’s who they are”, or because “they promised they would”, or because “they have already done it before” are all examples of consistency manipulation;
How It Works
- This type of persuasion simply works due to consistency bias. That is, we don’t like contradicting ourselves. Therefore, if we have said something, or behaved in a certain way (or we just are who we are in a certain way), then chances are we will not want to go against it;
- The persuaders or manipulator forces the person to act in accordance to what they have said, or what they have done, locking them into being consistent;
How to Protect Yourself from It
- There are two main ways to protect yourself from consistency manipulation:
Techniques That Cause It
- Forcing them to state something
- Forcing them to do something
